FDA Threatens Cherries – this is not a typo – read on February 12, 2006

This HAS to be the height of insanity!
Once again, the Federal Drug Administration proves they’re in the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies.
This time, it’s not by ignoring the dangers of Vioxx, something that, according to the FDA’s associate director for science, Dr. David Graham in his testimony before Congress, “Resulted in between 88,000 and 139,000 excess cases of heart attack and stroke.”
It’s something even more bizarre.
The headline from the Life Extension magazine story (March 2006) said, “FDA Threatens to Raid Cherry Orchards”
I had to read this several times because it’s sooooooo unbelievable. Here’s the jist of it:
On October 17, 2005, the FDA banned information about cherries’ health benefits from appearing on Websites and sent warning letters to 29 companies that market cherry products.
CHERRIES! We’re talking cherries here.
How ludicrous is this?
The interesting thing is, they’re not arguing with the health claims– no that might make sense.
They’re claiming that — get this — when the cherry companies disseminate this information, the Cherries become unapproved Drugs!subject to seizure.
In a letter to Friske Orchards, their position is basically that a new drug application has to be approved before the public can be informed about the scientific data supporting cherries
These are the people hired to protect our health! This is our tax money they’re spending.
With health care at crises proportions, we cannot afford to have the agencies charge with protecting us holding back information and deciding what we should know. Everything they do is run through a filter to make sure it does not have an adverse economic impact on the pharmaceutical industry’s profits.
I urge you to write your Representatives and demand something be done about these bozos at the FDA. They’ve been getting away with this for far too long and are endangering people’s health and well being.
Please let them know how important it is to pass the Health Freedom Protection Act – H.R. 4282.
Stand up for your First Amendment rights and help stop this scientific censorship and bureaucratic fraud.

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous things that I’ve ever heard about the government getting involved in affairs where they don’t belong.
