Before the Groundhog Sees His Shadow, Ninety-seven Percent of Americans Will Self Sabotage
Year after year, well intentioned individuals, in the heat of the moment, make New Year’s resolutions believing, at the time, they will carry them out.
Unfortunately, in less than a months time the majority have abandoned these good intentions and revert back to whatever self-defeating behavior they were determined to change.
The reason this happens is that their resolutions have no legs. There’s nothing to support them.
If all you do is say, “I’m going to stop smoking,” your unconscious mind says, “sure, we’ve heard that before,” as it reverts back to the old behavior even before the champagne looses it’s fizz.
In order to succeed in bringing about your desired change, engage in some form of goal setting. It doesn’t have to be complicated. There are many self-books available, including my own critically acclaimed first book, “Handbook to a Happier Life- a simple guide to creating the life you’ve always wanted.”
Here’s my quick start formula for achieving any goal:
1. Decide what you want. Do you want to stop smoking, start your own business, be healthier, or find the ideal relationship? (it’s a good idea to have goals in several areas of your life).
2. Write your goals in the present tense, using rich, positive language like, “I’m so happy and energized being at my ideal weight. I look and feel awesome!”
3. Make a list of why you want these goals. List all the benefits you will gain from achieving them.
4. Invest five or ten minutes each day seeing yourself as having already achieved your goals. In your imagination, experience what it’s like to have them. Then, let go and trust that it is already in the process of occurring.
5. Take action. Ask, “What could I do next to move me toward my desires?” Listen for inspiration and then act on it.
