Ask What, Not How June 25, 2005

In the past I’ve spoken about the idea that in order to reach our goals we must focus on the achievement and not get caught up in trying to figure out how. After all, the Bible says, ‘Ask and it shall be given.’ I think if it was meant for us to figure out how it would say that.

What I had not realized until recently is why it is so. We create and attract our desires to us, by using our subconscious mind, which functions from spatial, right brain hemisphere. This is the part of our brain that deals with conceptualizing and creating while the left takes care of logical thinking and measurable tasks. Obviously, both are necessary however, and this is a big key – when you want to create and attract your desire, you want to be doing it from the right brain. This is the subconscious, which works hundreds of thousands times faster than our logical mind.

The problem with asking how ‘How will I do this’, or a similar question is that ‘how’ is a left-brain function. Asking ‘how’ immediately takes us from the creation to the logical and, for the most part, we begin to list all the reasons of why we can’t do something.

For example, you might think, ‘I want to start my own business.’ At this point your left-brain jumps right in and starts to take over with self-sabotage questions like, ‘How can you do that? You don’t have the money.’ Or ‘How will you find the time with your job and family?’ Or maybe, ‘You can’t do that, you don’t know how.’ Note the similarity and the use of ‘how’ in each of the brain response.

In order to reach our goals and create the life we want, it is important to just stay in the vision of it being created. This sets up the universal laws that will attract what you want.

Of course, you can’t just stop there, but what we can do is instead of asking ‘how’ ask ‘what?’ You might ask yourself something like, ‘What would be a good next step?’ Or ‘What help do I need? Or what resources do I need?’

Eventually you will want to invite your left-brain to the party and start asking ‘how’ questions – but to do so too early in the creative process, will cause you to sabotage before you get started.

You have to just trust the creation process and hold your vision clearly in your mind, seeing as it is already complete. It’s like the farmer who plants vegetables. The farmer does not come back in a week, digging up the seeds, asking, ‘How are you doing?’ Instead he or she trusts, knowing that the tiny seeds, with care, will sprout.
