The Path of Least Resistance May 16, 2005

Recently I was explaining to a friend how a native New Yorker navigates the city streets. You see, people who live in the city walk differently than visitors. For example, years ago when I use commute daily from the Port Authority on Eighth Avenue and 42nd Street to my job on 46th and Madison Avenue. A visitor would most likely walk across 42nd Street, east to Madison Avenue and then turn left, making their way to 46th Street. A native on the other hand will travel with the lights and the walk signs and zigzagging pattern between East and North to eventually arrive at 46th Street and Madison Avenue. A native will take the path of least resistance and follow the most expedient route, not wanting to waste valuable time standing at the intersection waiting for the light to change so that they can cross.

In telling this story I realized how much this can parallel our lives and work. So many people take a linear approach to things and want everything to be perfectly in alignment before acting. Successful people will begin moving in the direction of their desire overcome using the information and resources they have on hand and add to that as they go. So how about you and I use this metaphor to get fast results without wasting time waiting for the lights to turn green?

If you just begun your own business it’s not too late to have all your support materials perfect and in place. If you just begin talking to people about what you are doing. Get in on your local Chamber of Commerce, or start by attending events or networking meetings.

What you want to begin getting into shape is many of us tend to do this time of year, start from where you are. If you live in an area that is covered with snow and is freezing cold like my yard, rather than waiting for spring you can begin by watching some of many of the exercise programs that are on TV, take yoga or join a health club.

There is power in taking immediate action and in addition to starting you in motion, it signals your subconscious mind that you are serious about going in the direction of your dreams.

Jim Donovan’s books have helped almost a million people reclaim their lives and take back their power. Are you ready?
