Leaving it Better than you Found It November 6, 2004

In the town where I live, not far from our home, is a lovely park where
Georgia and I sometimes go for quiet walks and reflection, have a
chance to talk, exercise and reconnect with each other. This is
something that has become even more important as we each become busier
with our respective work. In the park are trash receptacles, put there
so people can put their trash where it belongs and destroy the
environment. On the trash receptacle is a sticker that says, “Leave it
better than you found it.

One day while walking I began to think about that idea and I started
asked myself, “What would happen if we were to apply this idea in every
encounter, in every area or our lives?” Supposing, instead of just
picking up a piece of trash and throwing it in the proper receptacle,
an act which would greatly reduce the amount of litter in the world, we
were to apply the same idea to our relationships, business encounters
and every area of our lives. What if each time you had a meeting with
another person, you said to yourself before hand that one of your
intentions was to leave the person in some way better off than before
you met? Imagine how wonderful that would be.
